How Books Can Help Children Develop A Positive Self-Image

A positive self-image develops over time and impacts decision-making, relationships, and overall health and well-being. Self-image, the mental picture we have of ourselves, is not always positive or correct. It is “often shaped by past experiences, social comparisons, feedback from others, and cultural influences (Baumeister, 1999).” Thousands of studies are done on this each year and the findings are profound. Not only do children accept negative stereotypes as early as 6 years old, but “well-designed and properly implemented self-esteem interventions might benefit individuals and society as a whole (Orth & Robbins 2022).”

The founder of PPGJ Press and Bookstore and its associated literacy nonprofit PPGJLI, Dr. Artika Tyner, recognizes the fundamental primary role of parents and caregivers in shaping the long-term growth and development of a child’s self-image. She has ensured that these “First Educators” have plenty of support from her Black woman-led publishing company and social enterprise by offering them books that promote cultural awareness, literacy, and youth leadership development. These books have inspired positive change in the lives of children all over the world.

PPGJLI, an award-winning Black literacy nonprofit, is using books to help children develop a positive self-image by creating, sharing, and donating books that foster:

Cultural awareness

As children learn and celebrate their culture, they feel a sense of belonging and connection. This helps build self-esteem.

In the words of a teacher who participated in PPGJLI’s nationally recognized Leaders are Readers program, “With pictures of relatable            faces, our students engage more in reading and it has also improved their self-esteem to see themselves in books. They feel like they belong.”

As children learn and explore other cultures, they expand their worldview. This helps build cultural bridges and global citizens. Books that foster cultural awareness are both mirrors and windows for children. Mirrors that help children from all cultures see a positive representation of themselves on the pages of books, and windows that help children have a broader experience of the world. Both mirrors and windows play an important role in helping children develop a healthy sense of identity and a more compassionate and inclusive lens through which to view the world.

Literacy

As children are exposed to fun and meaningful books, they develop a natural love for learning and the skills needed for future success. Building confidence as a reader, writer, listener, and speaker is transformational in a child’s life. These core abilities are used daily in personal and professional lives. Beyond that, reading and listening to stories gives a greater understanding of self and an opportunity to cultivate imagination.

Youth leadership development

As children are introduced to characters that make a difference no matter their age, background, or experience, they become inspired. Whether it be in their individual lives or in their families and communities, children come to recognize that when they see a problem, they can create a solution. They begin to see themselves as capable. Characters in books can also bring careers and history to life for children, encouraging them to unveil their potential.

For First Educators, teachers, or caring adults who’d like to help a child develop a healthy sense of self, here are some PPGJ books you can read together.
