Rondo Renaissance

Rondo strong since 2017…

Planting People Growing Justice's roots run deep in the vibrant Rondo community, where our journey began in 2017. Our founder is a daughter of Rondo, our board members have their roots in Rondo, and we are building an intergenerational community of learning and growth.  Together, we are committed to preserving cultural heritage through the arts and humanities. PPGJLI has blossomed into a beacon of hope and empowerment through our innovative programs, educational initiatives, and community outreach efforts.

History of Rondo

The Rondo community in Saint Paul, Minnesota, stands as a testament to the resilience and unity of African Americans in the mid-20th century. Spanning nearly two square miles, Rondo Avenue served as the heart of this vibrant neighborhood, bustling with Black-owned businesses, churches, and schools. By the 1960s, it was home to eighty percent of Saint Paul's African American population, embodying a flourishing hub of cultural and economic activity.

However, the very existence of Rondo was threatened by the construction of Interstate 94 in the late 1950s, part of a nationwide highway system that disproportionately impacted Black communities. Despite its vibrant economy and tight-knit community bonds, Rondo fell victim to eminent domain and the devastating effects of urban renewal. Over three hundred Black-owned businesses were lost, along with seven hundred homes, leading to a staggering $270 million home ownership equity gap. The construction of the highway not only severed physical connections within the community but also shattered the dreams of generational wealth and stability for countless families, leaving a profound legacy of loss and resilience in its wake.

Dr. Josie Johnson Library

Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute (PPGJ) partnered with Saint Peter Claver Catholic School to completely revamp and rename their school library in honor of Dr. Josie Johnson, Minnesota's First Lady of Civil Rights.

As part of the redesign, PPGJ and Dusty Dembley Interior Design, have transformed the library space into a modern, inspiring learning environment designed to promote the enjoyment of reading and discovery. The library’s new design features bright and welcoming contemporary styling with artwork celebrating African American heritage.

This project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Mike and Linda Fiterman Family Foundation.
